The story with Uma Thurman
Apr 28th
It was Saturday morning, the second day of Banggi Tragedy. I dropped of my dad off at Kudat Police HQ to do complete police report of family members who were involved. The earlier report was somehow misinterpret because family members of the rest of the passenger didn’t bother to report in. Hence why the early report was 21 people when it is actually more than that. Anyway, I left my dad there and went off to Kudat hospital together with my brother to collect his medication. As I was returning from the hospital, I found out there is a press conference scheduled for that day. That’s when I noticed Uma Thurman. No not the real one, the Sabahan version. Why Uma Thurman? Because the spectacle and rolled up hair resemble Uma Thurman in Gattaca and The Accidental Husband. And that’s the start of me bitching about my Uma Thurman encounter.
A journey of hundreds miles start and end at Mi Casa

So it has been two year since I last come for a visit. Originally I planned to go and stay at Danum Valley Field Centre; DVFC for short, then visit Erlinna’s grave after that but there was a last minute changes which force me to rescheduled my plan. So yesterday I spend my whole day driving for about 12 hours; surprisingly I wasn’t that tired and don’t even have to switch driver, accompanied by my old friend Jolivia. We started about 6 in the morning, after taking our breakfast at McDonald. A journey of hundreds miles start with a good McBreakfast I say. I was thinking to go earlier but I keep snoozing my alarm clock and when I have already pack, I went and try to fix my car headlamp before going. I know, thats a very stylish way of saying, “I’m late foo!”

I miss cycling at New Year eve. Last two years we would cycle to usher in the New Year. This year, I don’t feel like celebrating it. I have a few invitation; was even offered two VIP ticket to watch Stompin at Jesselton Point, but I declined it. I just don’t feel like celebrating new year. I feel bad leaving dad all alone at home. A friend of mine suggested to bring him along to Kinabalu Club. I don’t think he would go for that. So both of us just sat at home watching new year celebration on the tube and the kittens’ inquisitive antic.

Banggi Tragedy
Dec 3rd
*WARNING! You are reading a super long post, to my standard at least*
It was morning of 26th November, everybody was busy in the house getting ready, because today my dad, mom, Raihana, Nadiah and her husband Roy are going to Banggi Island, North of Sabah, where my dad came from. Rizal and myself didn’t go because of work commitment. Originally Hanafiah and his wife Zaiton would be coming along to but that day he is not feeling well and his wife had food poisoning. So its was just five of them, together with a few of my relative from my mother side, going by 5 cars all together. It was about midnight, I’m about to doze of when I received a phone call from my uncle from my dad side, informing me that the boat that was carrying them didn’t arrived. They were following a normal villager’s boat; very much the same as the one parked next to Pasar Besar KK, at about 4 pm. I have been in this type of boat a few time, mainly because of work. My company have a few project at Banggi Island and at times, I have to go there by these boat. Using this type of boat, you can easily reach Karakit in two hours time, if it’s not full of cargo and have a good engine, but most of the time its three hours. There is one passenger ferry service going to and from Karakit but its limited to one ferry only and during this time of the year, that ferry is always full. My family couldn’t make it to board that ferry because its already full. I think that’s why all of them decided to go using the ill-fated boat. At first thought of the news, I was thinking that maybe the boat was having an engine problem. But then again, you can still get faint signal on your mobile phone and message for help. It was half and hour after that that I have to prepare the worst. My dad was found floating on the sea and the boat had sunk, none of my family member; except for my dad, know how to swim.

Who would have guess that just from a simple mistake of phone number, a love could blossom. Who would have known than both individuals was in the same room before this, not knowing that destiny have written that both of their path would crossed. It’s a classic case of serendipity, and in certain situation, its like the movie You’ve Got Mail, only to changed it to You’ve Got SMS and I would be Meg Ryan and she is Tom Hanks.
It all started out from a simple SMS, wanting to find an acquaintance who are doing road project to which I replied that it could be me. Yeah, we Civil Engineers can do wonders with structure and infrastructure. When I mentioned my name Paival Yahya, that person replied that it was a wrong number. Then I asked what’s the name of the person he or she was looking for, Noriv was the reply. Throughout the years of me working, meeting clients and contractors, my name have always been pronounce wrongly. So I naturally thought that it was me, so I replied that is also my name, only to know a few months later that the person was supposed to be Nor Affendy. How did Nor Affendy get changed into Noriv is still a mystery to me.
